mixtape series 02: mezzir

Mezzir’s back and this time for a full feature of sorts. I actually can’t take credit for discovering this kid. All that goes to my esteemed vacationing co-blogger JJS III. But he’s a relatively new talent and should be making tons of waves soon. For now, however, he’s put together a little mixtape of his influences for our listening pleasure. In addition, he’s given us an exclusive remix AND wants everyone to know you can download his debut EP featuring a few bootlegs you’ve heard here before in glorious 320kbps. With that kind of generosity, how can you not check out his website, twitter, soundcloud, facebook, and myspace? Go be his friend and blow him up real big.

ITMS EXCLUSIVE!
Missy Elliot - Gossip Folks (Mezzir Remix)

rafter: get your ass out on the floor.

Rafter - No Fucking Around
Rafter - Timeless Form, Formless Time
Fol Chen - No Wedding Cake (Rafter Remix)

Ginger children may not have souls, but some of them grow up to make outstanding music. Evidence of this phenomenon can be heard on Rafter‘s new album Animal Feelings. With influences as wide-spread as Koji Kondo and R. Kelly, there are surprises around every corner of this forty-one minute adventure.

The opening track “No Fucking Around” grabs you by the shirt collar, demanding that you break out your spastic moves on the dance floor. One could compare it to Alphabetical era Phoenix featuring Daft Punk on the chorus, but one could also probably come up with better descriptions than that.

Rafter has also done a remix of ITMS faves Fol Chen‘s “No Wedding Cake”. It may not sound like much when you first begin playing it, but the beat switch at 1:30 will make his intentions clear. And then when you hit 2:58? You’ll wind up saying things like, “Oh no he di’n't, gurl!” Or you’ll be like, “Why the fuck am I listening to this shit?” Either way, it will be totally shocking and amazing. Kind of.

mezzir: yes sir.

Run The Red Light - Miracle (Mezzir Remix)
La Roux - Bulletproof (Mezzir Remix)
We Are Scientists - After Hours (Mezzir Remix)

The best thing about “Miracle” is that it doesn’t sound like a remix at all. If you received this unmarked song in your e-mail with no knowledge of the original band Run The Red Light, you’d likely assume it was a wholly unique piece of work. Perhaps this was a product of creator Mezzir‘s methods. He avoided listening to the original track prior to taking a stab at it, and it somehow resulted in a jam that’s reminiscent of ’80s movie themes and the Valerie collective of France. As far as individuals who don’t love this go? One can safely assume that they are jerks. And terrorists.

For those who’d like to hear Mezzir’s skills utilized on a more familiar song, it should be brought to your attention that he’s also revamped tunes by La Roux, We Are Scientists, Valery Gore, The Roots, Wolfmother, Memory Tapes and several other artists. Be sure to download or stream his take on Delphic‘s “Doubt” over here, as we hold our breath in anticipation of his forthcoming remix of Chromeo‘s “Night By Night”.

Lastly, it’s only logical to share a small snippet of how Mezzir would describe himself, in the form of the following sequence: “I can’t dance, I can’t talk, only thing about me is the way that I walk.” Is any other information really necessary?
